DTF vs Sublimation: Which Is Better for Custom Apparel in 2026?

DTF vs Sublimation: The Short Answer

DTF (direct-to-film) prints onto any fabric type and any fabric color, including 100 percent cotton and black garments, and leaves a soft raised layer on the surface. Sublimation dyes the fabric itself, producing a print with zero hand feel, but it only works on white or light-colored polyester and poly-coated hard goods. If you print on cotton or dark shirts, you need DTF. If you print on white polyester apparel or mugs and want a print you cannot feel, sublimation wins.

How DTF Printing Works

DTF stands for direct-to-film. The process runs in five stages:

  1. The design is printed onto a clear PET film using CMYK ink plus a layer of white ink behind it
  2. Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink
  3. The powder is cured with heat until it turns glossy
  4. The finished transfer is cut and packaged, ready to press
  5. You heat press it onto the garment, let it cool, and peel

The white ink layer is what makes DTF work on black and colored garments. Because the adhesive bonds to fibers rather than reacting with them chemically, fabric content does not matter. Cotton, polyester, blends, canvas, denim, and most tri-blends all take DTF well.

How Sublimation Works

Sublimation uses a dye that skips the liquid state. Under heat and pressure, solid dye converts directly to gas, penetrates open polyester fibers, and solidifies inside them as the material cools.

  1. The design is printed in reverse onto sublimation paper with dye-sublimation ink
  2. The paper is placed face down on a polyester or poly-coated item
  3. Heat and pressure convert the dye to gas, typically around 385 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit
  4. The dye bonds inside the fibers and the paper is removed

Two constraints follow directly from the chemistry. The dye needs polyester to bond to, so cotton will not hold it. And the dye is translucent, so it disappears against any garment color darker than the ink itself.

When to Choose DTF

  • You print on cotton or cotton-blend shirts, which is the majority of the apparel market
  • You print on black, navy, heather, or any dark garment
  • You want one method that covers every fabric in your catalog
  • You want to start without buying a printer, ink, and a maintenance routine
  • You need photographic detail or fine gradients on a dark background
  • You print in small runs and cannot justify equipment cost per job

When to Choose Sublimation

  • You print on white or light polyester performance wear, jerseys, and athletic apparel
  • You want a print with absolutely no hand feel, which matters for activewear and baby items
  • You produce mugs, coasters, ornaments, mousepads, and other poly-coated hard goods
  • You want all-over prints that run past the seams
  • You already own the equipment and print high volume on compatible blanks

Cost Reality: What Each Actually Requires

The comparison people usually skip is the startup path.

Sublimation requires you to own the production line. A converted or dedicated sublimation printer, sublimation ink, transfer paper, a heat press, and a color profile you have tuned. Ink dries in the heads if the printer sits unused, so occasional printing carries a maintenance tax. You also carry the risk of every misprint.

DTF lets you separate printing from pressing. You can buy finished transfers, which means your only equipment is a heat press. There is no printer to maintain, no ink to waste, no color profiling, and no minimum volume needed to keep hardware healthy. Many established shops that own DTF printers still order transfers for overflow and rush jobs, because outsourcing the printing removes the equipment bottleneck.

If you are deciding where to start, DTF has the lower floor. A heat press and a stack of ready to press transfers puts you in business this week.

Durability: What Actually Fails

Sublimation cannot crack or peel because there is nothing sitting on top of the fabric to crack or peel. It fades only as the garment itself fades.

DTF sits on the surface, so it can fail, but almost every failure traces back to one of three causes: not enough pressure at the press, peeling while the transfer was still hot when it needed a cold peel, or washing on hot with fabric softener. Pressed correctly, DTF is extremely durable. We test our transfers through 80 or more wash cycles at a 315 degree, 15 second press with medium pressure and they hold color and adhesion throughout.

Can You Use Both?

Most established shops do. Sublimation covers the white polyester and hard goods side of the catalog, DTF covers cotton and dark garments, and UV DTF covers tumblers and glassware that sublimation blanks do not exist for. They complement each other more than they compete.

If you can only run one, DTF covers a wider share of what customers ask for, because cotton tees and dark garments dominate custom apparel requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DTF the same as sublimation?

No. They are entirely different processes. DTF prints ink onto film and heat presses it onto the surface of a garment, working on any fabric or color. Sublimation turns dye into gas that bonds inside polyester fibers, and it only works on light-colored polyester or poly-coated items.

Which is better, DTF or sublimation?

Neither is better in the abstract. DTF is better for cotton, blends, and dark garments, and better for anyone starting without equipment. Sublimation is better for white polyester apparel and poly-coated hard goods, and produces a print with no hand feel. Match the method to the blank.

Can you sublimate on cotton?

Not durably. Sublimation dye needs polyester fibers to bond with. On cotton it sits on the surface briefly and washes out within a few cycles. Coated sprays and polyester-carrier workarounds exist but produce inconsistent results compared to DTF on the same shirt.

Can you use DTF on dark shirts?

Yes. DTF transfers include a white ink underlay printed behind the color layer, which is exactly what makes them opaque on black, navy, and other dark garments. This is the main capability sublimation lacks.

Does DTF feel like vinyl?

No. DTF is noticeably softer and thinner than heat transfer vinyl. You can feel a slight raised texture if you run a hand over it, but it moves with the fabric rather than sitting on it as a stiff patch.

Is sublimation more durable than DTF?

Sublimation is more forgiving over the long term because there is no surface layer that can crack or peel. Properly pressed and properly washed DTF is also very durable and will outlast most garments. Sublimation removes the possibility of user error at the press, which is its real durability advantage.

What is the difference between DTF and DTG?

DTG (direct-to-garment) prints ink straight onto the shirt with no film step, which requires pretreatment on dark garments and works best on cotton. DTF prints to film first, which means transfers can be stored and pressed later, and works on a wider range of fabrics.

Do I need special ink for DTF?

Only if you print your own. DTF requires pigment-based DTF ink and white ink, plus adhesive powder and a curing unit. If you buy finished transfers, none of that applies and a heat press is all the equipment you need.
