If you've ever stood at your heat press wondering if it's hot enough, if you should peel now, or why your last shirt came out with a faint box around the design, you're not alone. We get those questions every single week here at We Print U Press.
After more than 16 years of making custom shirts, we know most pressing problems come down to a handful of things nobody explains up front. So we wrote them all down in one place.
It's called Press With Confidence: The DTF Handbook, and it's built straight from the questions our customers actually ask us.
What is the DTF Handbook?
Press With Confidence is a 51-page PDF that walks you through pressing direct-to-film transfers the right way. It starts at zero, so you don't need to know a thing about DTF to use it. And it stays useful long after you've pressed your first hundred shirts.
It's formatted to read easily on your phone or print at home on regular letter paper. Clickable bookmarks let you jump right to the section you need, even in the middle of a job.
What's inside, chapter by chapter
- DTF Vocabulary. Eleven terms explained in plain language, one page each. Gang sheet, hot peel, pre-press, T-Seal, upscale, opacity and more.
- Artwork and File Prep. Why a JPG always prints a background and a PNG doesn't. Plus why art that looks transparent on screen can still print haze, halos or boxes.
- Sizing and Placement. Six transfer sizes and exactly where each one belongs, from 2" x 2" neck labels to 11" full fronts and backs.
- Choosing a Heat Press. Clamshell vs. swing-away vs. draw, how to size a platen to the work you take in, and a 9-question checklist to run before you buy.
- Pressing It Right. Side-by-side settings for a home iron, a Cricut Easy Press and a heat press, then the steps in order for each one. It also covers the four things that ruin a transfer and the safety rules that matter around a hot platen.
- Working With Your Customers. Four checks to run on customer artwork before you accept it, including the copyright check. Plus ten questions to ask before you start a shirt order.
- Why Did This Happen? Three real failures, diagnosed. Blurry enlargements, a press that says 310°F but isn't, and transfers that peel after the first wash.
Who it's for
We wrote this for apparel decorators, boutique owners, crafters and anyone starting a shirt business. If you just got your first heat press, it's the book we wish every new customer had on day one.
One honest note: this is a guide to pressing DTF transfers. If you're looking for how to build or maintain your own DTF printer, this isn't that book.
The questions it answers most
Here are a few we hear all the time. The handbook goes deeper on every one.
- Do I need a heat press? No. A home iron works with the steam off and overlapping sections. A heat press just gives you more even pressure and steadier heat, which means fewer failures.
- Are your transfers hot peel or cold peel? Ours are hot peel, so you peel the film while it's still hot.
- Why is my transfer peeling after washing? Usually it's not enough heat, pressure or time, or uneven contact from seams, collars or pockets.
- What file should I send? A high-resolution PNG with a true transparent background, 300 DPI at the size you plan to print.
