The Short Answer
DTF artwork requirements come down to one line: send a transparent PNG at 300 DPI, built at the exact size you want it printed, in RGB color mode. That covers the large majority of jobs. Do not send a JPEG, do not enlarge a small image to fill the space, and do not mirror your file, because the RIP software mirrors it during printing.

Best File Format for DTF Transfers
Format matters for two reasons. It decides whether your background is truly transparent, and it decides whether compression eats your detail before the file ever reaches the printer.

DTF Resolution: Why 300 DPI Is the Number
DPI on its own means nothing. What matters is DPI at final print size. A 3000 x 3000 pixel file is 300 DPI at 10 inches and 100 DPI at 30 inches. It is the same file either way.
- 300 DPI at print size: the standard for apparel. Shirts are viewed from roughly two feet away, so detail holds up under close inspection.
- 150 DPI at print size: the practical floor. Usable only for oversized back prints of 14 inches or larger that are viewed from a distance.
- Below 150 DPI: expect visible pixel stair-stepping on curves and soft, fuzzy text. Enlarging the file does not add detail back.

If your file falls short, the fix is to rebuild at size or source a higher resolution original. Upscaling in Photoshop or an AI upscaler can rescue a borderline file, but it invents detail rather than recovering it, and edges usually look waxy on a shirt.
How to Set Up a DTF File: 7 Steps
- Set the document size in inches, not pixels. Build the canvas at the finished transfer size. In Canva this is the step people skip, and the reason a design ends up unscalable later.
- Set resolution to 300 DPI before you start placing artwork, not after.
- Work in RGB. Send RGB even though DTF printers lay down CMYK plus white. Our RIP software handles the conversion and produces better color from an RGB source than from a file you converted yourself.
- Delete the background entirely. A white layer set to zero opacity is not the same as no layer. Toggle off every other layer and confirm you see the transparency checkerboard.
- Convert all text to outlines or curves. This prevents font substitution, which is the most common cause of a transfer that arrives looking almost right.
- Do not mirror the artwork. The RIP mirrors it automatically. A pre-mirrored file presses backward.
- Export as PNG-24 with transparency, at print size, using the print or highest-quality preset. Web export presets downsample. Check the exported file dimensions against the chart above before sending.
Design Rules That Prevent Reprints
These are the specifications that come up most often on jobs we have to flag before printing.
- Minimum line weight: 1 mm. Thinner lines can break up, especially on dark garments where a white underbase sits behind them.
- Minimum text size: 6 pt. Below that, letter counters like the holes in a lowercase e tend to fill in.
- Avoid opacity below 75 percent. The white underbase is not printed under very light areas, so faint elements can drop out completely.
- Give elements breathing room. Detail that nearly touches will blur together once the ink spreads slightly on film.
- Consider a knockout on solid-color shirts. Removing the areas of your design that match the garment color lets the fabric show through. The transfer looks odd on film and looks excellent on the shirt.
- Check gradients that fade to nothing. A gradient ending at 0 percent opacity will show a visible cutoff where the underbase stops. Ending around 25 to 30 percent gives a cleaner fade.

Gang Sheet File Setup
A gang sheet is one large film with many designs arranged on it, and it gives you the lowest cost per design. The file rules are the same, with three additions:
- Leave at least 0.25 inch between designs so there is room to cut them apart.
- Every design on the sheet still needs to hit 300 DPI at its own printed size. One low-resolution element ruins its own spot on an otherwise clean sheet.
- Gang sheets print exactly as laid out, so proof the whole sheet, not just the individual designs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What file format is best for DTF transfers?
PNG with a transparent background. It is lossless, it preserves true transparency, and it is what DTF RIP software handles best. Vector files such as SVG, AI, and EPS are equally good for logos and text because they scale without quality loss.
What DPI should DTF transfers be?
300 DPI measured at the final print size. 150 DPI is the absolute minimum and should only be used for large back prints viewed from a distance. Below 150 DPI, pixelation is visible on the garment.
Can I use a JPEG for DTF printing?
