How to Press a DTF Transfer
If you're wondering how to press a DTF transfer the right way, you're in the right place. Whether you're brand new or just want to double-check your process, this guide walks you through everything you need to know to get flawless, long-lasting results.
What Is a DTF Transfer?
A DTF (Direct to Film) transfer is a full-color design printed on clear film using specialized ink and adhesive powder. Once cured, the film is ready to be heat pressed onto apparel like t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and more. Learn the basics in our Ultimate DTF Transfer Guide.
Supplies You'll Need:
- DTF Transfer (pre-cured and ready to press)
- Heat press (manual, clamshell, or auto-open preferred)
- Apparel item (cotton, polyester, blend, etc.)
- Parchment paper or Teflon sheet
- Lint roller (optional, but recommended)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preheat Your Heat Press
Set your heat press to 300°F to 320°F depending on your press and fabric type. Let it fully warm up before pressing.
Step 2: Pre-Press the Garment
Place your shirt (or other item) on the press and close it for 5 seconds with light pressure. This removes moisture and smooths out wrinkles.
Step 3: Position Your DTF Transfer
Lay the transfer on your garment, ink side down. Use a ruler or alignment guide if needed. Cover with a sheet of parchment paper or Teflon if desired (not required but adds consistency).
Step 4: Press It
Press at 300–320°F for 15-20 seconds using medium to firm pressure. The exact pressure is critical—too light and it won’t adhere properly.
Step 5: Let It Cool Completely
This is where many people go wrong! Let the shirt cool all the way down before peeling the film. Peeling too early can lift the design.
Step 6: Peel & Press Again
Once cool, peel the film in one smooth motion. Then place parchment or a Teflon sheet on top and press again for 5–10 seconds. This final press ensures durability and gives a matte finish.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Design isn’t sticking? Increase your pressure or verify your press is reaching the correct temp.
- Film hard to peel? Let it cool more before peeling—don’t rush it!
- Transfer feels rough? Try a longer final press with parchment.
