DTF Troubleshooting Guide: Fix Common Transfer Issues
Having trouble with your DTF transfers not sticking, cracking, or peeling? Don't worry—you’re not alone. Even experienced makers run into problems from time to time. In this DTF troubleshooting guide, we’ll walk you through the most common DTF issues and how to fix them fast.
1. DTF Transfer Not Sticking to the Shirt
Symptoms: Parts of the design lift or don’t adhere after pressing.
✅ Fixes:
- Increase pressure: DTF transfers need firm, even pressure to bond.
- Check temperature: Make sure your heat press is reaching 300–320°F consistently.
- Pre-press: Always pre-press the garment for 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Flat surface: Press on a smooth, even surface—zippers, seams, and folds can affect adhesion.
2. Film Rips or Pulls Ink When Peeling
Symptoms: The design lifts or smears during the peel step.
✅ Fixes:
- Let it cool: Always cool completely before peeling the film.
- Peel slowly: Peel in one smooth, low-motion pull from a corner.
- Humidity: If your space is humid, allow a few extra seconds for cooling.
3. Design Feels Rough or Rubbery
Symptoms: The transfer feels sticky or plasticky after pressing.
✅ Fixes:
- Always repress: After peeling, press again for 5–10 seconds with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet.
- Too much pressure: Very high pressure or uneven heat can affect finish quality. Use medium-firm pressure.
4. Design Cracks After Washing
Symptoms: Fine lines or large areas of the design crack or chip.
✅ Fixes:
- Improper application: Under-pressing or skipping the final press weakens adhesion.
- Washing too hot: Always wash cold and tumble dry low.
- No inside-out wash: Designs should be turned inside out before washing.

5. Ghosting or Blurry Edges
Symptoms: The edges of the design look fuzzy or shifted.
✅ Fixes:
- Transfer moved during press: Use heat-resistant tape if needed.
- Unstable base: Make sure your garment is centered and flat before pressing.
- Press closed too slowly: Lowering the press slowly may cause film shift. Close it quickly and firmly.
6. My Press Is Doing Everything Right… But It’s Still Failing
If your results are inconsistent even after checking pressure, temp, and timing, your press might be the issue.
✅ Try This:
- Test the actual heat: Use an IR thermometer to see if the plate matches your set temperature.
- Check pressure with paper: Try the dollar bill test—if you can pull it out easily, the pressure isn’t firm enough.
- Upgrade: If your press has cold spots or poor pressure, consider investing in a clamshell or auto-open model.
7. Designs Are Peeling After a Few Wears
Symptoms: Transfers look great at first but start to lift after a few washes.
✅ Fixes:
- Did you skip the final press? Always do a second press after peeling!
- Customer care: Include wash instructions if selling or gifting.
- Use high-quality transfers: Our DTF transfers are durable and tested to last.
