What is a DTF mockup?
A DTF mockup is a digital preview that shows how a direct-to-film (DTF) transfer design could look on a garment. It helps you explore design size, shirt color, and placement before you apply a physical transfer.
Our free DTF mockup generator places the product's existing artwork onto a blank shirt image. You don't have to download the design, upload it somewhere else, or figure out how to layer images yourself.
The mockup is a planning and presentation tool. The product you purchase is the physical DTF transfer, not the shirt shown in the preview.
How to make a T-shirt mockup with our free DTF mockup generator
1. Open a design and select Create a Mockup
Visit an eligible ready-to-press DTF transfer listing on our website and click or tap Create a Mockup. That product's design loads into the tool automatically.
2. Choose a white or black shirt
Switch between the two shirt colors to compare the look. A design can feel completely different on a light shirt versus a dark one, so this is an easy way to explore both.
3. Select your transfer size
Choose from the size options offered on that design's listing. Measurements refer to the artwork's longest side, with its proportions preserved.
For example, an 11-inch design that is taller than it is wide will be approximately 11 inches tall. A wider design will be approximately 11 inches wide. The tool displays the artwork's approximate width and height to help you compare.
Not sure which size fits your garment? Check our DTF transfer size chart.
4. Choose front center or left chest placement
Choose Front center for a larger front design or Left chest for a smaller placement. Use the sliders to move the artwork up, down, left, or right. You can also reset the placement and start again.
Remember: the wearer's left chest appears on the right side of the preview because you're looking at the front of the shirt.
5. Save your mockup or add your transfer to the cart
On a computer, use Download Mockup to save the image. On supported phones, tap Save or Share Mockup to save through your phone's share menu. If that option doesn't work on your device, use Download file instead or Open image to save.
Ready to order? Select your transfer size and quantity, review the displayed price, and choose Add to Cart from the mockup window.
You're ordering the transfer only. The shirt is not included. The subtotal in the tool is shown before cart discounts, and any eligible discounts are applied in the cart.
How accurate is the transfer size in the mockup?
The preview uses a Gildan Softstyle Unisex Large as its size reference, based on a 22-inch flat chest width and 30-inch body length. Each mockup image includes a size reference label, such as "Size reference: Gildan Softstyle Unisex Large • 13" longest side."
That gives you a consistent reference when comparing sizes. You can see how a 3-inch left chest design differs from an 11-inch front design on the same reference shirt.
Here are the sizes offered on the Just One More Game design. Size names can differ from design to design, so always check the listing you are viewing.
| Size option on the listing | Longest side |
|---|---|
| Pocket Size | 3 inches |
| Large Pocket | 4 inches |
| Infant | 5 inches |
| Toddler | 6 inches |
| Large Toddler | 7 inches |
| Youth | 8 inches |
| Larger Youth | 9 inches |
| Adult Small-Large | 10 inches |
| Adult Small-2XL | 11 inches |
| Adult XL-2XL | 12 inches |
| Adult 3XL-5XL | 13 inches |
Placement and size are for illustration only. The garment image is an approximate representation, and the same transfer will look different on different shirt sizes and styles. Measure your actual garment before making your final sizing decision.
When you add an item through the tool, your selected transfer size and quantity determine what goes into the cart. Shirt color and placement are preview choices. They do not change the transfer artwork or tell us to supply a finished shirt.
Make customer previews without learning design software
If you make custom shirts for other people, you know how helpful it is to show an idea instead of trying to explain it.
Use your downloaded mockup to:
- Show a customer a design on a light or dark shirt.
- Compare a small left chest placement with a larger front print.
- Share a shirt idea on your business's social media.
- Plan seasonal apparel, like Christmas DTF transfers, before pressing a sample.
When sharing, describe the image as a mockup and confirm the actual shirt, transfer size, and placement with your customer. The preview gives the conversation a starting point. Your finished garment is the final result.
Why does the mockup have a DO NOT COPY watermark?
Mockup images are protected with a "DO NOT COPY" watermark to discourage unauthorized reproduction. The watermark may be more noticeable on some designs and will remain visible if you print from the mockup image.
Transfers purchased from We Print U Press are printed without this watermark.
You can use your mockup to preview and promote your shirt idea. It is not a print-ready artwork file and should not be used to produce transfers. See our Copyright and Usage Policy for details.
Frequently asked questions
Is the DTF mockup generator free?
Yes. There is no charge to use the free DTF mockup generator or to download your preview. Physical DTF transfers are purchased separately.
Do I need Canva or another app?
No. The tool works directly on eligible product pages in your browser. The selected product's design loads automatically.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. You can change the preview, select a transfer size and quantity, and save or share your mockup on your phone. Available saving options depend on your device and browser.
Can I preview a left chest design?
Yes. Select Left chest, choose your transfer size, and adjust the position with the sliders. This is an approximate visual reference, so check the placement on your actual garment before pressing.
Does selecting a black shirt mean I am buying a black shirt?
No. White and black shirts are preview backgrounds only. Adding to the cart from this tool purchases the selected DTF transfer, not a finished shirt or blank garment.
Can I upload my own artwork into this tool?
No. This version previews the design from the product listing you're viewing. For your own artwork, see custom DTF transfers.
Why don't I see Create a Mockup on every product?
The generator is available on eligible ready-to-press DTF transfer listings. Other product types and listings using different page templates may not include it.
Try it on your next shirt idea
We built this tool to make one more part of shirt making easier. Pick a design, explore your options, and show your customers what you have in mind, all without leaving the product page.
